Today, Liverpool four-piece Courting return with details of their highly anticipated new album “New Last Name”, which will be released on 26th January 2024 via Lower Third. To mark the announcement the band have also shared a video for a new single titled “Throw” and have announced an extensive run of EU / UK headline tour dates for February, April, and May 2024 – tickets will go on sale at 10am on Friday 10th November.

Having already laid-waste to any preconceptions you had about them on last year’s debut album “Guitar Music” – which saw the band earn 5-star reviews, a 7.2 from Pitchfork, and extensive plaudits from the likes of The Needle Drop, DIY, Dork, NME, Alt Press, CLASH, BBC Radio 6 Music, BBC Radio 1, and Radio X – the new record once again subverts the idea of genre and paints a much bigger picture.

When recording “New Last Name” Courting also collaborated in the studio with indie heroes Gary and Ryan Jarman of The Cribs, who worked closely with the band on production duties. The results are as thrilling as they are rewarding. Brimming with nuance and pop culture references, the only constant is that the Liverpool group maintain their irrepressible sense of abandon.

Whilst “Flex” provided a first taste of the band’s continued ambition, “Throw” sets the tone for the record. “New Last Name” is an album as adventurous thematically as it is sonically – but as it’s title suggests, it hints at new beginnings. “It’s a theatrical play within an album,” explains frontman Sean Murphy O’Neill. “. “There’s a lot going on. It can be simply enjoyed as an album, but there are characters, acts, stage directions etc. The listeners can decide on the narrative themselves, but we want them to get lost in it.”

With her stunning voice and intense drive, Cooper Phillip (stylized as COOPER PHILLIP) captures the undivided attention of most people around her. COOPER has always been a small town girl with big dreams. Born in Russia to a family of classical musicians, her adolescent years were shaped by her grandmother and aunt. Her mother, a master violin player, toured the world with various symphonies. This separation led COOPER to take comfort in music at an early age where she was mesmerized by the vocal stylings of Ella Fitzgerald. She learned many of her songs, paying close attention to her pronunciation and vocal tone. At 12 years of age, COOPER went to live with her mother. It was a major adjustment for both of them, but her mom soon realized her daughter possessed a gift and encouraged her musical talents. Moreover, COOPER attended the prestigious Moscow State Classical Academy (she studied classical piano, theory, harp, jazz, blues, ballet and voice). Her vocal teacher at the academy introduced her to the music of Mariah Carey – COOPER was obsessed!

There’s a haunting vulnerability and stark openness to Nashville-based singer, songwriter and guitarist Maddie Medley’s new song, “Coming of Age.” The first and only instrument you hear for the duration of the song is the strumming of her electric guitar. It’s got an intoxicating verve to it, as she vocally dives into the song. It’s a sound that immediately sweeps you off your feet. Like a look back over your shoulder to the earlier work of PJ Harvey, Medley stands alone with just her guitar, singing about a personal insight many 20-somethings grapple with – “coming of age” – and in this case, its with love. “Shouldn’t I know how to do this by now / can somebody tell me how to figure this out,” she sings. “I am coming of age in the quietest way, you are looking at me, but I don’t know what to say” she continues, then questioning over and over, “are you sure it’s supposed to feel this way?”
