How do AI singing voices work?
An AI singer is a model that has learned what one voice sounds like: its tone, texture and the way it moves between notes. There are two main ways to turn that into vocals on a track, plus a third that musicians use for writing.
1. Voice conversion: re-sing a vocal in another voice
You give the model a vocal and it sings it back in the voice it learned. The melody, timing, words and emotion come from the input; only the voice changes. This is what Jammable does, using RVC (Retrieval-based Voice Conversion) models, the same kind of model the wider AI cover community trains. What is an RVC model? explains how it works.
Conversion is the right approach when you already have the performance: your own recording, a demo you sang, or a vocal you have the rights to. Because the AI follows your vocal note for note, you stay in control of the song.
2. Song generators: a whole song from text
Song generators take a description of a style and, optionally, lyrics, then write and produce a complete track with vocals. Suno is one of the best known: its plans start free with 50 credits a day, and Pro costs $8 a month with commercial use. You control the idea, not each note.
3. Vocal synthesizers: singing from notes and lyrics
Vocal synthesizers sing a melody you write as MIDI notes, with the lyrics you type under them. ACE Studio's Vocal Synth works this way and lists 140+ voices. It suits producers who want to write vocal lines without recording them.
The three approaches to AI vocals
| Approach | You give it | You control | Examples |
|---|---|---|---|
| Voice conversion | A vocal recording | Melody, timing, words and delivery (from your vocal) | Jammable, Kits.ai, RVC WebUI, Applio |
| Song generator | A style description and lyrics | The idea and the words; the AI writes the music | Suno; Jammable's Generate Song |
| Vocal synthesizer | MIDI notes and lyrics | Every note, in a music editor | ACE Studio |
How to get an AI singer on a track with Jammable
- 1
Open the cover maker
Go to Create. It works in the browser on your phone or computer, with nothing to install.
- 2
Add your audio
Upload an MP3, WAV or M4A file of up to 6 minutes, or press Record and sing into your microphone. Use your own recording or a track you have the rights to.
- 3
Pick a voice
Search 60,000+ community voices across music, anime, cartoons and gaming in the voice library, or pick a voice you trained under My voices.
- 4
Make it a duet, if you want
Add up to 6 voices. Leave Auto pick on and the voices take turns wherever the singing changes, or choose Choose myself to decide who sings each part.
- 5
Set the sound
Shift the pitch for each voice, add autotune, pick an effect and set the vocal volume against the music. The tips below cover which settings matter.
- 6
Create and listen
Jammable separates the vocal from the music, converts it into the chosen voice and mixes it back. Your covers are saved in your Library.
AI duets: several voices on one track
Jammable lets you put up to 6 voices on one track. With Auto pick, Jammable finds where the singing changes and hands each part to the next voice. With Choose myself, the song is shown as one bar coloured by voice: drag the borders to move where the voices swap, tap a part to hear it, give it to another voice, split it or remove it. Each part needs at least 2.5 seconds, and choosing yourself needs an uploaded file or a recording. Every voice gets its own pitch setting, so a low voice and a high voice can share one song.
Use your own voice as the AI singer
The AI singer can be you. Train a voice from at least 3 minutes of your own singing (6 to 10 minutes sounds better) and it appears under My voices on the cover maker, ready to sing whatever you record. Use it to hear a demo in your trained voice, to stack your own harmonies, or to duet with yourself. Training comes with the Creator plan ($9.99 for the first month, then $24.99 a month) and the Power plan, or a training pass. The steps are in how to train your own AI voice model, and AI voice cloning explains what audio you need. Train on your own voice, or a voice whose owner has agreed to it.
Generate a song from lyrics on Jammable
On paid plans, in most regions, Jammable can also write the song for you. Choose Generate Song, describe the style in up to 512 characters (or start from a preset such as Pop, Trap, R&B, Indie, K-pop, EDM, Lo-fi or Country), then type your lyrics with [Verse], [Chorus] and [Bridge] tags, or leave them blank and let the AI write them. The generated song is then sung in the voice you picked. It isn't offered with voices in the music category.
Tips for better AI vocals
- Start from a clean vocal. The AI copies everything it hears. A dry vocal with no reverb, no crowd and no music bleeding through gives the clearest result.
- Tell Jammable what you uploaded. If your file is only vocals, turn on My audio is just vocals to skip separating the vocal from the music. If the track has harmonies or ad-libs, turn on Split out backing vocals for a cleaner lead.
- Match the pitch to the voice. Pitch moves in semitones, from -24 to +24. Going from a male to a female voice, try +12; female to male, try -12. If a voice sounds strained at the top or mumbled at the bottom, it is singing outside the range it was trained on.
- Keep the key. Shifting by 12 semitones moves a whole octave, so the vocal stays in the same key as the music. Other values change the key of the vocal and can clash with the backing.
- One voice at a time. RVC converts a single voice well and a stack of voices badly. For duets, let each voice take its own part rather than singing over each other.
- Use autotune lightly. Jammable's autotune snaps the vocal to key, from Light through Medium to Strong. Light is a polish; Strong is the obvious robotic sound.
- Add one effect. Effect presets go on the vocals or on the whole song, one at a time.
- Set the vocal volume. Raise or lower the vocal against the music by up to 12 dB.
- Fix the voice, not the settings. If your own trained voice sounds thin, add cleaner, more varied audio and retrain.
